‘DOCTOR STRANGE’ BECOMES MARVEL’S BIGGEST SINGLE-CHARACTER DEBUT FILM
Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange earned a total of $616 million worldwide pushing it to new levels at the box office this weekend.
This haslanded the film into the Top 10 of 2016 domestic and global films, also making it the biggest single-character introductory movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The Scott-Derrickson-directed film is also the ninth MCU title to cross the $600 million threshold, and Disney’s fifth movie to do so in 2016 alone, according to Deadline. Domestically, the sci-fi film has grossed $205.1 million. But particularly in the international market, the film has been doing well, especially in China, Korea, the United Kingdom, and Russia.
The epic has surpassed other Marvel successes including 2015’s Iron Man, which ended up at $585 million; Ant-Manthat came in at $520 million in 2015; 2011’s Thor, at $449 million; and that same year’s Captain America: The First Avenger, which landed $371 million worldwide.
Doctor Strange first debuted in theaters on Nov. 4. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Dr. Stephen Strange, alongside Rachel McAdams and 12 Years a Slave‘s Chiwetel Ejiofor.
